About Highschool Outreach
The main focus of the High School Outreach team is to encourage high school students to pursue careers in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math). Through engaging and informative presentations, we educate high school students across the GTA of the diverse opportunities in science and engineering. Our team is composed of enthusiastic Ambassadors from various disciplines in both engineering and science fields that are excited to share their experiences with high school students.
Last year, we collaborated with another outreach team at the university called Hi-Skule to organize our very first Take Your Kid to Skule Day. We invited high school students to spend a day in the life of an engineering student. Students took a tour around the University of Toronto campus, including tours of various laboratories that engineering students use for their courses. The group was able to get insight from a panel of professors and even attend a first year lecture! The students met the University of Toronto’s Aeronautics Team to learn about the fundamentals of designing an aerial vehicle and about the various projects and competitions the team takes part in. The WISE team was very excited to converse with the group throughout the day and the students left the university with a new perspective on the various opportunities to be considered!
To maximize the number of high school students we meet, we also take any chance we can to collaborate with other groups that have the same mission. Members of our team worked with Science Expo Youth Empowerment Group, an organization that connects youth to the STEM community. Students were able to approach us with questions about our experiences in science and engineering programs and we were able to grow our connections by getting more students to know about WISE and our mission!
